Devasena : A Virago or Epitome of Women Empowerment ?
I really feel sorry for this woman. Her whole life was full of pain, agony, and torment. Her own in-laws conspired against her husband for the crime he didn't commit: her monstrous and devilish brother-in-law, ardently lascivious for the throne, convinced his mother and inveigled her into planning the homicide of her husband; her mother-in-law's blind rage forbade her from seeing the truth and she easily fell for the trap. As a result, her husband was brutally slashed and backstabbed by his own loved ones. And top of that she was finally held captive by her inhuman brother-in-law for the next 25 years.
Many movie viewers say that her and her husband's fate was the result of her arrogance and vociferousness; they malign and slander her character by saying that she is a virago, and embodiment of arrogance. But I don't agree with this, as being outspoken and forthright doesn't make you arrogant or a termagant.
She always spoke unfiltered truth and that didn't mean she deserved early widowhood; life imprisonment; and lifelong solitude and sorrow in return. If anyone is to be blamed for her doom, then it is only and only her malicious brother-in-law, Bhallaldev.
This vicious monster, notwithstanding knowing that his brother likes Devasena, asked Shivagami for Devasena's hand. Shivagami, on the other hand was somewhere deep down filled with some sort of guilt that she devoid her other son of throne —this doesn't mean that she considered Baahubali as undeserving— who silently and obediently accepted her decision and never desired anything in return. But who knew that this so called obedient son is actually a vicious and cunning creature, waiting for the right opportunity to grab. And when he heard of Devsena and Baahubali, he struck while the iron was hot and expressed his ardent desire for Devasena to Shivagami who, to disburden (for the reason mentioned above) herself, immediately agreed and vowed him that Devsena belongs to him—as if she were a doll.
But here, Baahubali and Devasena have already fallen in love and when Baahubali told Shivagami that he already vowed to marry and protect Devasena, and he won't break his vow at any cost—as this is what Shivagami taught him—, then Shivagami lost her temper as her promise to Bhallaldev was broken and as a result of this she called Baahubali incompetent for throne and slandered Devasena's character.
As a result of all this, Devasena never became the queen of a huge empire which she deserved and never received the love and respect from her in-laws. Furthermore, she was ostracized from the palace when she was pregnant and her husband was sacked from his regal status.
Even after all these hardships, her hard time was not over as in all these times she was accompanied by her husband but later her husband was brutally killed on the same day when her son was born —and a father couldn't even see his son for once—, and she was left all alone.
What destiny did with her, was still not enough as after all this, something worst happened; Devsena saw her newborn baby and mother-in-law, who just few moments before realized her sins and accepted her daughter-in-law wholeheartedly, being hit by arrow and drowning in the brook —it was, as if destiny wanted to squeeze every ounce of joy and happiness out of her life. And finally when she lost everything , she was captured like an animal and tormented for next 25 years.
Seriously guys I pray that no one should face such type of difficulties and hardships in his/her life. Hats off to Devasena! for not loosing hope and being stoical in such difficult circumstances.
